Whirling Slash is one of those spear skills that makes sense the moment you try it. You swing in a circle, the wind kicks up around you, and packs start stumbling in the middle of it. The slow and blind matter more than people give them credit for, especially while you're standing inside a mess of claws, arrows, and spell effects. If you're planning gear upgrades early, keeping some PoE2 Currency aside for a better spear or attack-speed roll can make the skill feel much smoother before the build fully comes together.

The basic hit is fine, but the Whirlwind is the part that sells the skill. It sits around your character and punishes anything that stays close. Each stage adds more reach, so the area starts to feel safer as you keep attacking. You'll notice it most in tight maps, where enemies keep walking into the storm instead of spreading out. The blind also cuts down random deaths. It won't save you from every boss slam, of course, but against normal packs it gives you breathing room without asking for a separate defensive button.

Whirling Slash isn't just about spinning in place forever. The trick is knowing when to step out. Once you leave the Whirlwind, it collapses and hits hard, gaining a huge damage boost for each extra stage you've built. That makes the skill feel a bit like charging a trap around yourself, then snapping it shut when the screen gets crowded. Good players will start to time this by instinct. Build to three stages, move out, watch the knockback, then go straight back in. Gem quality makes that burst even nastier, so it's not just a small polish stat.

The Wind tag added in patch 0.4.0 gave Whirling Slash a lot more room to breathe. It's still an Attack, Melee, Strike, and AoE skill, so the usual physical support options are easy to justify. Brutality works well if you're staying pure physical, and Rapid Attacks helps a lot because stage building feels rough when your swing speed is low. But now you can also mess with Wind support ideas. Fan The Flames is interesting for ignite setups, while Impact Shockwave gives you another way to punish stacked enemies. That said, don't just copy links blindly. The tags help, but your weapon, ailment plan, and clear speed all matter.

A lot of Whirling Slash mistakes come from support gems that look perfect at first glance. Bloodlust and Bleed IV can raise damage against bleeding targets, but they stop the skill from causing bleed on its own. That means you need another skill to apply bleed first, which can feel awful while mapping. Exploit Weakness has a similar catch with armour break. Also, the level 20 version asks for 157 Dexterity and costs 39 mana, so don't ignore stats while chasing damage. If you're buying upgrades or testing a second setup with cheap poe2 currency, focus on attack speed, mana comfort, and a weapon that actually supports the rhythm of the skill.
